Blog Post#5
According to the Interior Ministry, 119,000 people marched in Paris, which was the largest protest.
People were furious over the French president's pension reform which didn’t acknowledge Parliament and the population’s opinion. The new pension reform increases the age of retirement from 62 to 64. Next week, new nationwide protests will be demonstrated on Thursday against the new pension reform.
Reaction:
When I first heard about the protest. I was quite shocked because I didn’t think that a pension reform will create a huge problem like this. Just increasing the retirement’s age from 62 to 64, wouldn’t have much impacts, because it is just two more years But then, if we think of people who don’t get a high salary, who work everyday with precarious conditions of work, two years can make a huge difference. Now. I hope that the French’s president will come out with a solution for this matter, cuz if he doesn’t come out with a solution, the protest won’t end easily.
Questions:
Since the article doesn’t have all the details, so a lot of questions have come up.
- Why did the President want to increase the retirement’s age ?
- If they are lots of people protesting, why the president didn’t come out and try to find
an agreement with the population?
- Why did the president want to do a pension reform without the population’s consent?
- Is it possible to just increase from 62 to 63, since two years is too much for some types of people ?
- If the President keeps wanting to do the pension reform, will he provide some help to ordinary people ?
Good article, Pauline. Some members of the U.S. congress want to change our pension requirements. If they make any drastic changes, you can be sure that people in the U.S. will take to the streets also. I have a few grammar points to make, but I'll talk to you later.
